2007 Farm Tour
Deutsch Country Days was held on October 20th and 21st, 2007. It was a gorgeous weekend and over 8000 people attended the festivities. With many, many activities to see and try. Some are guest participating, to try and to learn. A great experience for all ages.
Cutting Firewood was an important task back in the 1800.
Having the power equipment helped.
Making chairs and other furniture is all part of early farm living.
Being able to operate other machinery is also important.
Both homes and workshops were heated with wood.
Unless a man had access to a tin shop, he had to make dishes and bowls from wood.
Men and women both had to be skillful in a variety of ways. There were very few market places to buy ready made goods.
Many books have been written. For anyone who enjoys history of early ways of The United States. A large amount of which started here in Missouri shortly after the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
Bee keeping was also one of a woman's chores.
Sometimes women would work together on special projects.
An occasional peddler would stop by, hoping to make a sale.
Women needed some finery to wear to church.
A bath tub would also be nice.
Making rope is just another chore for a farmer and his kids. A lot of rope is needed around a farm.
Dipping candles and making lye soap are necessary duties for farm women.
While the women and older daughters are working. The baby would be asleep near by.
Old machinery can always be found around the homestead. Either waiting to be repaired or has been replaced.
Blacksmithing had to be done. For shoeing horses, making much needed tools and repairing broken tools. A good blacksmith not only reshaped metal, but, could also weld metals together. They could temper the metal to make it harder and stronger. Cutting tools had to be tempered in order to keep a sharp edge.
Evenings, after dinner and the dished done, various crafts would be made. When talents could be seen. Most were used to decorate their homes and some were given as gifts.
Music would be the primary means of entertainment. All the children were encouraged to learn to play an instrument. The violin and zither were the most popular. The piano or organ if they were available.
