In the Civil War, soldiers didn't fight all the time. A man has other duties to perform. This one is keeping the fire going and heating water for doing dishes, laundry or whatever hot water is needed for.
Women could be found in some camps. Making or repairing clothing. Some times taking the part of a nurse to care for the wounded.
The flags always flew near the officers quarters.

The Company Surgeon had to be ready whenever a battle broke out. He explained that most soldier would survive surgery, but, because of infection, would not survive recovery.

The surgical tools were crude and simple and probably not sterile. But,they did the best they could, with what they had to work with.

Officers would have a horse and a fine saddle. The troops would always be on foot. Horses were used mainly to haul supplies or for pulling cannons.
